5th SMS' Summer Camp
Functional Analysis

Szczyrk, August 25th - September 4th 2005

Report
September was beautiful this year. At least at the beginning. And the end of August was beautiful, too. At least in Szczyrk. Oh, those berries! And mushrooms, too! And some interesting lectures and a nice group of people. To summarise: The Silesian Mathematical Society's Camp.
When it comes to talks, the timetable was as follows (believe it or not:)

CAMP'S TIMETABLE
  1. Functional analysis' history (Wojciech Bielas)
  2. Introduction to Hilbert spaces theory (Łucja Turlej and Michał Farnik)
  3. Orthonormal bases in Hilbert spaces (Tomasz Kochanek)
  4. Linear operators in Banach spaces. The uniform boundedness rule (Agata Nowak)
  5. The pointwise convergence of Fourier series problem (Agata Nowak)
  6. The open mapping theorem, the closed graph theorem and their applications (Agnieszka Klama)
  7. Topological vector spaces (Rafał Kucharski)
  8. Hahn-Banach theorems. Extending positive functionals on ordered vector spaces (Tomasz Kochanek)
  9. The Banach limit (Grzegorz Wyłupek)
  10. An abstract view on Poisson integral (Michał Lewicki)
  11. Runge's theorem (Michał Lewicki)
  12. Weak topologies and convexity (Rafał Kucharski)
  13. Bochner's integral (Pola Siwek)
  14. About a generalization of the sinus function (dr Tomasz Szostok)
  15. The Mazur-Ulam isometry theorem (Romka Wajs)
  16. Schwar'z theory of distributions and its significance for differential equations (Tomasz Kochanek)

We were quite a hiking group. There wasn't a day without someone going trekking. The record belongs probably to Romek and Gosia - they were at least thrice on Skrzyczne. We specialised ourselves in walking on tracks without any signs, not to mention the "bushing" during our trip to Barania Góra. There was no other way, due to the wind-fallen trees. Even the mushroom pickers went hunting to the mountains. And scrambled eggs with mushrooms was so popular, that there wasn't many of it left for the cooks. Noone could complain about the food - even Grzesiu and Kasia stopped going for pizza in the end. Strangely enough, there were no people eager to grill and we made it only once (...ah, the young today). The "new faces" allowed as to play "Psychologist" twice, there was "Mafia" and "Scrabble", we had bridge and chess players. Of course, there was also some singing and guitars.
It's a pity it was so short.
