XXIV SMS' Session
Applications of mathematics

Szczyrk, 30th May - 1st Jun 2008

Report
The "Applications of Mathematics" topic returned to our sessions after three years of absence, even though this time SU arrived with it to Szczyrk. Because of a non-standard date our group was not as numerous as usual, but we couldn't complain on lack of attractions. After devouring a dinner from Biedronka, a big part of our group sat in the main room of the hostel, where Piotr Sobieraj told the tale of "Applications of mathematics in computer games". Discussions about going through sloping, semicircular walls in the three-dimensional space continued throughout half of the night (even though the numbers of the discutants were diminishing succesively). An interesting fact - on the next day those who talked almost until sunset were the ones who got up without any problems.

After breakfast we set out to climb Małe Skrzyczne. On the way our destination changed to Skrzyczne, but eventually we visited both and marveled at more landscape than we planned for (ah, those twists and turns on the tracks).

On our way back the Big Bird was unable to fly in a critical moment (note to self - Big Birds are flightless) and suffered an injury.

Calling GOPR, thanks to their marvelous organisation and skills in transfering the talks, took almost as much time as going back from Skrzyczne. Eventually Piotrek with escort was put on a quad and went to the hospital in Bielsko-Biała, while the rest of us came back to the hostel, where after launching an assault on the fridge the Talk Giving commenced.

Piotrek Idzik began with a talk "Pseudo-Random Number Generators". After him was Jola Marzec, telling us about cryptography. Weronika Siwek joined the trio of talkers, describing the Saaty's method to us and explaining its imperfection. After our wounded and his lifesavers got back, Michał Stolorz joined the talkers, summoning from the depths of his memory a talk about Enigma (the most popular talk during this year Pi Days), and then he talked about elliptic curves and more.

New board of Student Mathematical Society was chosen after the talks. The trip was, traditionally, ended with a great cleaning.
