XXV SMS' Session
Numbers

Szczyrk, 28th - 30th November 2008

Invitation

We kindly invite all interested people to take part in the first of this academic year SMS' session. This will take place in Szczyrk (Poland), on 28th-30th November 2008. The main topic will be numbers. Especially welcome are 1st and 2nd year students.

Some organisational issues:

?As usual, the conference will take place in the Silesian University holiday resort in Szczyrk, next to Olimpijska Street 56. Suggested route would be: train do Bielsko, then local bus (PKS) to Szczyrk (the bus should go in the direction of Salmopol or Bialy Krzyz), the destination bus stop is Szczyrk-Wodospad (this is the third bus stop after the Szczyrk - city centre). Then walking in the same direction as the bus, you have to take a slight left turn and walk for a couple of minut uphill - this is the Olimpijska street. Few days before the Session, when the complete list of participants will be known, we will make sure that there will be at least one person on the train that will know how to get there. If someone is planning to go by car, please let us know earlier, so we could use the empty seats in your car.

? If you would like to participate, please let us know by talking to any SMS' member (there is usually plenty of us in the room 524). You can also write to knm@knm.katowice.pl.
? The total cost of the session is approximated for 50PLN, this covers rooms and food but not travel expences. Since we cook by ourselfs, you can let us know about your food preferences but please be reasonable.
? In Szczyrk we will get dishes, beddings and beds. If the nuber of participants will be greater than number of available beds, those who applied latest will have to take some mats and sleeping bags to have a place to sleep. These will be informed earlier. Past experience says that it is always a good idea to take your own cup. Please don't forget to take something waterproof, something warm and a good hiking boots because if the weather will be fine, we might go for some walk.
? The session is meant to be scientific so everyone is strongly encouraged to give some talk (however this is not obligatory). The main topic is Numbers and suggested titled of talks are:
- Applications of complex numbers in the technology / computing science / etc.
- Tricks involving complex numbers and not only.
- factorisation problem.
- Generalisations and applications of commonly known numbers
- Chain fractions
- Large cardinal numbers
- Prime tests
- Generating prime numbers
- History and understanding of numbers.
- Mersenne's numbers, Fermat's numbers, perfect numbers, transcendental numbers etc.
- Numbers in ...
- Suprising statistics
Of course you can give a talk for your own topic. Students of 1st and 2nd year are especially encouraged to give a talk - this is a great opportunity to share your passions with others and also you can give (sometimes your first professional talk) in a friendly environment. The talk doesn't have to be long, complicated, or strictly mathematical (can also be related to physics, astronomy, computing sciense...)

In the case of any questions or suggestions, please don't hesitate to write to knm@knm.katowice.pl. Hope to see you in Szczyrk!
