During the lecture we will finish the proof of the Gleason-Kahane-Żelazko theorem and will introduce the notions of spectrum and spectral radius of an element. Afterwards we will state and prove several of the properties of these notions and the theorem about the non-emptiness of the spectrum of an arbitrary element of a complex Banach algebra with identity.
